Holiday writing - a haiku

We are just back from a wonderful week in a south Devon cottage not far from Brixham. The cottage was deep in the countryside, surrounded by trees and fields with easy access to the coast path. Walking was easy as paths led in various directions directly from our front door and it was bliss!

It's often the case that when I have a holiday or short break in a rural area I find myself to be more creative. I guess part of that is also the fact that I have less demands on my time. Going out walking most days on unfamiliar paths prompts ideas to pop into my head with ease. Some are dismissed, some get noted down and evolve into a piece of writing I might share with others.

During this particular holiday I started two poems and worked on them during the week to a point where I'm fairly confident they are finished. Although leaving them for a few days untouched is a good test of whether they really work as intended.

I was pleased to start a haiku on day one of our holiday - I felt it was setting the mood for the coming days.

rhythmic tick of an old clock
call of a buzzard
